The F-35C is the carrier variant of the Lightning II, with a larger wing, folding wingtips and landing gear designed for catapult launch and arrested recovery. It brings internal weapon carriage and fused mission information to the US carrier air wing.

The system in detail
Design & operating context
Carrier configuration
The C was designed for aircraft carriers that use catapults and arresting gear. Its larger wing and strengthened landing gear address that operating environment, while folding wingtips reduce the space occupied on deck. These are physical differences from the A and B, so a family-level silhouette or dimensions table can conceal important distinctions.1
Fuel and carriage
Lockheed Martin identifies substantial internal fuel and both internal and external weapon carriage. Internal stores help preserve the aircraft’s low-observable configuration; external stores change its signature and drag. Maximum combined payload is not the same as the internal allowance, and a published range is not automatically a combat radius.1
Mission information
The first-deployment account emphasises gathering, combining and distributing mission information within the strike group. The aircraft is therefore relevant both as a weapons platform and as a sensor contributor. Data links require compatible participants and supporting infrastructure; the existence of a link does not establish that every user receives every sensor product.2
Operational introduction
The US Navy declared initial operational capability for the F-35C on 28 February 2019 after VFA-147 completed carrier qualifications and Safe-For-Flight certification. VFA-147 later embarked with Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard USS Carl Vinson for the first operational forward deployment. A US Navy photograph documents a VFA-147 F-35C recovering aboard USS George Washington on 18 August 2026. These milestones establish operational use; they do not mean every carrier or squadron has completed its transition.256
Relationship to other F-35 variants
The C shares the wider F-35 programme but differs in ship interface, wing geometry and internal fuel from the other variants. The B’s vertical-landing capability cannot be assigned to it. Equally, C-model fuel and carrier characteristics do not apply to land-based A aircraft. Product-card measurements should remain attached to this configuration.3
Support and evidence limits
GAO’s June 2026 programme assessment discusses spare-parts, maintenance and support-management problems across the F-35 enterprise. That context matters for a carrier force dependent on sustained support, but programme-wide findings do not provide a readiness percentage for a particular ship or F-35C squadron. Availability, modification status and embarked support need their own dated records.4
