Im Jahr 2013 erhielt die Werft Remontowa den Auftrag zur Entwicklung eines Prototyps und zweier Serienschiffe einer neuen Klasse von Minenjagdbooten. Die Kiellegung des ersten Bootes erfolgte ein Jahr später. Das Schiff wurde 2015 zu Wasser gelassen, Taufpatin war die Witwe des Vizeadmirals Andrzej Karweta . Das Geschwader, zu dem die “Kormoran” und ihre Schwesterboote gehören, trägt den Traditionsnamen „Vizeadmiral Andrzej Karweta“. Das Boot war seinerzeit das erste komplett nach 23 Jahren wieder in Polen entwickelte und gebaute Kriegsschiff.
