Die Schulterstütze des G36 kann abgeklappt werden, was die Waffenlänge von 1.000 auf 750 Millimeter reduziert. Wie das Gehäuse, das Griffstück und der Handschutz des Gewehrs wird auch die Schulterstütze aus einem Verbundwerkstoff gefertigt.
Mit Ausnahme des Rohrs und des Verschlusses sind alle Teile der Waffe aus Kunststoff gefertigt. Das Sturmgewehr G36 ist ein automatischer Gasdrucklader mit Drehkopfverschluss, mit dem Einzelfeuer und Feuerstöße abgegeben werden können. Seine Schulterstütze kann eingeklappt werden, beispielsweise im Häuserkampf.
