A Fenestron (sometimes alternatively referred to as a fantail or a "fan-in-fin" arrangement ) is an enclosed helicopter tail rotor that operates like a ducted fan .
During the 1990s, a third generation Fenestron was produced by Eurocopter (Aérospatiale's multinational successor), equipped with unevenly-spaced blades in order to optimize its noise levels; this unit was first fitted onto the company's EC135 helicopter, and was later incorporated into the designs of the EC130 and the EC145 , the latter of which had been produced for over a decade with a conventional tail rotor. During the 2010s, multinational helicopter manufacturer Airbus Helicopters (a rebranded version of the Eurocopter entity) developed the Fenestron further for their new H160 helicopter, a medium-twin sized rotorcraft; in this revision, the fan duct was intentionally sloped by 12 degrees to achieve improved performance and greater stability when being operated with higher payloads and flown at lower speeds.

Fenestron equipment records. Variants, orders and quantities are shown as reported in each inventory source; coverage is incomplete.
Army exact named equipment holdings: AS365N3 Dauphin. Active, operational-reserve and training units excluding equipment in store; November 2025 IISS assessment. Named service only; no parent-force or national total inferred. Source role: HELICOPTERS / MRH. Original estimates, ranges, reporting names, reserve, lease and employment scopes retained; nested included counts are not added. Missile-system quantities mean launchers, not rounds. No readiness, crew, carried weapon, payload, factory-production or future order count inherited.
