The A400M is a four-engine transport designed to bridge tactical delivery and longer-distance heavy airlift. Its high cargo compartment accommodates loads that smaller transport aircraft cannot readily carry.

The system in detail
Large propellers, a high wing and a T-tail define the airframe. The rear ramp allows vehicle loading and aerial delivery. Unpaved-field operation still depends on surface strength and the actual aircraft load.1
Tanker equipment extends the transport role but requires the appropriate installed kit and receiver clearance. Cargo, passenger and medical layouts have different equipment and capacity limits.1
The current Airbus page lists 37 tonnes and describes 40 tonnes as a planned increase. This record retains the published baseline instead of treating the proposed increase as certified capacity.1
Compare payload–range points and field limits together. Maximum payload, maximum speed and maximum ferry range are separate operating cases.1
